Strunk notes that the key to a Howard victory will be stopping the Broadneck linebackers on defense, and to keep a balance on offense.
Anderson and the offense responded with 21 straight points — all Anderson touchdowns — in the second quarter to take a 27-14 lead, and the defense held Sherwood scoreless the rest of the way in a 34-14 victory.
Senior quarterback Casey Crawford finished with four touchdown passes, and Anderson improved his season totals to 1,671 yards and 21 touchdowns rushing to go with 20 receptions, 315 yards and four scores.
The Lions are coming off a dominating performance against a Sherwood team that was undefeated on the field.
The Wildcats tried to make it up, but got lost in a defensive scrum about 5 yards out for a failed two-point conversion. Running back Jason Carcamo filled in the gaps, carrying the ball four times for 17 yards to help move the Bruins downfield.
The Wildcats swallowed up half of the third quarter, inching forward just five yards or so at a time to wind up approximately 20 yards from the Broadneck zone. Chandler landed in the hands of Broadneck defensive back Brendan Kennedy instead. This time around, the Lions will be looking to take the next step as a program and get over the hump against a Broadneck team that knocked off the Patriots in the 4A East region final last week.
At the end of a game slowed by 41 accepted penalties and a slew of offset ones, the Wildcats 4-1 went home with their first loss of the season, having contributed 20 to that total. Just six plays later, the Bruins had found themselves at the 1-yard line — partially in thanks to two hefty penalties on the Arundel defense.
Carcamo took the ball and rushed 32 yards.
Slye once again leaned heavy on his arm, throwing to score a second Wildcats touchdown, a 24-yard reception by Jordan Andrews. They were trailing, 14-6, when they changed things up and put one of the top running backs in the area — Malik Anderson — at wide receiver, where he was an all-county player a year ago. The heavy homecoming crowd roared as the Bruins cruised into the second quarter with a comfortable lead of 21-0.
Howard will host the Bruins on Nov. That recipe was nothing new for Howard, which outscored 412 points and allowed only 137 — a point differential of 275 — and beat three playoff teams in the area in Oakland Mills, Glenelg and 3A East region champions Reservoir. Broadneck quarterback Josh Ehrlich is only a freshman — remember that.
