The 11 stated areas of cooperation are agriculture; education, culture , and sports; health, population, and child welfare; the environment and meteorology; rural development including the SAARC Youth Volunteers Program ; tourism; transport; science and technology; communications; women in development; and the prevention of drug trafficking and drug abuse. The Member States urged the CD to negotiate an international convention prohibiting the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons under any circumstances and to undertake negotiations for the complete elimination of all nuclear weapons within a specified period of time.
They also reiterated their support of UNSC Resolution 1373 of 28 September 2001 and affirmed their determination to redouble efforts, collectively as well as individually, to prevent and suppress terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. During the Fifteenth Summit, the Heads of State or Government emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum through clear links of continuity between the work already underway and future activities and recognized the need for SAARC to further strengthen its focus on developing and implementing regional and sub-regional projects in the agreed areas on a priority basis.
They expressed the conviction that more needed to be done and at a far greater pace. They called upon the international community to assist Member States of SAARC to deal effectively with the adverse economic effects of terrorism in general and to meet the rising insurance and security-related costs in particular.
The Sixteenth Summit will be hosted by Bhutan in April 2010.
