If what you're trying to clean is too big to immerse in vinegar, try using ketchup. Not Helpful 37 Helpful 83. It will also soften and remove paint. It's been only a month and it has already started to be rusted. Use a brush a toothbrush works great to scrub the paste into the rusted object.
I am not fond of wet steel wool, so I use brass or stainless steel pot scrubbing pads from the housewares department for scrubbing parts. Its always been my favorite way to remove rust! If you still see any rust, just repeat the process. Usually one to three days will have the rust falling off. If the object is too big to soak directly in the white vinegar, pour a layer over the top and allow it time to set.
Use an electric sander to remove rust on large pieces. I've used it on every conceivable type of tool and metal object and it has worked like a charm. Convert the rust.
Are "think tanks" a good idea? It is less abrasive than steel wool, but will still do the trick in removing the rust.

Purchase a rust converter which works to stop rust from eating away any more of the metal. Many times, batteries go bad when they're left in a remote over long periods of time.
